Lancaster And Morecambe College Apprentice Awards

Lancaster and Morecambe College held their prestigious Apprentice Awards Ceremony on Monday 6th February. One hundred and sixty guests attended the event which saw five apprentices win awards for their charisma and dedication to their work.

The event was opened with a speech from David Wood, who spoke of the great sense of pride he felt attending the awards ceremony, into which 29 Lancaster and Morecambe College students had been entered by their current employers.

Speeches were given by Marianne Turner from Printing Plus and Melissa Burton from Goody Good Stuff, both of whom have taken on a number of apprentices from the college.

Marianne spoke about how the college had built fantastic trust relationships with local businesses, which helped to sustain the economy in the area.

Melissa Burton also spoke of the advantages of using the apprentice scheme: “when looking to employ someone I am more likely to pick someone with a vocational qualification than I am to take someone with a university qualification.

“I love the freshness that comes with taking on an apprentice and the fact that they have not been corrupted by corporate UK or academia.

“I would recommend to anyone working in a business that they should take a Lancaster and Morecambe College apprentice on.

“My first apprentice Georgina has been invaluable to me. Her creativity and free thinking have been instrumental in the setup of many of our new campaigns.”

Awards for Most Improved Apprentice, Most Innovative Apprentice, Most Dedicated Apprentice and Best Team Player were awarded to Lee Adams (Lancaster University), Georgia McDevitt (Goody Good Stuff), Lisa O’ Kane (Travis Perkins Ltd) and Tracey Mulligan (The Midland Hotel) respectively.

The award for the Apprentice of the Year went to Scott Fairweather, who was taken on by Punch Bowl Inns Ltd after completing the Professional Cookery Level 3 at Lancaster and Morecambe College.

Scott’s employer said that “if Scott carries on to grow at the same rate as he has been doing, he will become a serious force to be reckoned with.”

College Governor, Mike Wistow was also impressed with the event: “I was part of the judging panel and was highly impressed by the range of talent which employers have recognised in Lancaster and Morecambe College’s apprentices.

“It was a tremendous evening. It was really good to see the apprentices getting recognition for their hard work and achievement and to appreciate how the academic and industrial worlds have worked together to help young people to successfully develop themselves for their future career paths.”

All nominees were awarded with a medal at the end of the evening, and the winners went away with trophies.
