The present chief minister, Oommen Chandy laid the foundation stone for a new medical college. This college will be known as Doctor Moopen Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences. Notable ministers representing health and welfare of backward communities ministries took part in the foundation stone laying ceremony. According to the proposed plan, the medical college will be built on 50 acres of land. The project cost is estimated about 250 crore INR. This planned project will be the latest addition to the long list of medical colleges in India.
Director of this medical college, Anoop Moopen told about the availability of courses in this medical college. He said that the Doctor Moopen Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences would have graduate and postgraduate programs in various medical science subjects. Programs in this college will be available for medicine, nursing, dental, and pharmacy. This college will also have research facilities for associated subjects. It is planned that in the first phase of construction, the medical college and the hospital building will be set up.
The director further explained that the in the first phase, the medical college would have about lecture halls, labs, academic blocks, and a teaching hospital with 700 beds. A modern e-library is also planned in this stage. The first phase of construction will also have residential facilities for students and faculty members. It is also planned that construction of shopping centers and food courts will be done in the first phase itself. In addition, this will be one of its kind medical colleges in the country, which will have about two acres of botanical garden. This medical college will have a green campus.
The future arrangements of this college have encouraging prospects for medical students. The director of this planned medical institute hopes that by 2017, the college will have MBBS seats, about 750 in number. It is expected that the college can educate around 1,256 postgraduate students in various domains of medical science. Even the number of doctors and teachers are expected to be around 200.
According to the project administrator, the first block of this medical institute is expected to be functional by August 2012. The first batch of MBBS students will start from next year, August 2013. In this medical college and hospital, the poor and the needy can get treatment at a lesser rate. This medical college and hospital will cater to various healthcare requirements of neighboring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as well.
The planned facilities of this medical college and hospital would feature state of the art cardiology, neurosurgery and neurology centers. It is also planned that there will be ICU and an emergency trauma care centre.
